Sopore lecturer booked, suspended over harassment allegations
Srinagar, April 14 -- Protests erupted in Sopore after a student from a Baramulla government school accused a lecturer of harassment even as a case was registered against him, said police on Monday.
The lecturer has also been placed under suspension. The students, who were joined by locals, took out protests demanding the arrest and termination of the lecturer.
SP Sopore, who reached the spot, said that a case has been registered.
"A case has been registered against the teacher. The director of school education has also placed him under suspension. The girl students were protesting and we persuaded them to end their protest as action has been taken," Sopore superintendent of police Iftikhar Talib said.
"Pending inquiry into his conduct, the lecturer, is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect and is attached to BHSS Badugam, Gurez, Bandipora. Further, the joint director, north, is hereby appointed as Inquiry officer who shall conduct an inquiry and submit a report to this Directorate within 15 days," reads the order of the director of school education.
District president of J&K teachers association, Baramulla, Mushtaq Bhat, said that he is concerned over the allegations. "Student safety and dignity are paramount. We condemn any misconduct while respecting due legal process. A fair and swift inquiry must prevail."
Colleges and higher secondary schools have been closed in Sopore till Saturday as a precautionary measure....
