Shimla, July 6 -- A "timber smuggler" has been arrested for burning down the 60-year-old Thandi Dhaar forest rest house in the Rajgarh area of Sirmaur district, the Himachal police said on Saturday. The accused has been identified as Naresh Kumar (29). The six-decade-old rest house, operated by the forest department under the Habban forest range and used as a forest guard hut, was destroyed on June 29 and the accused was arrested on Friday evening. He was arrested after investigation revealed that the fire was not accidental; rather it was deliberately ignited, officials said. The police said Naresh used to smuggle wood. Forest officials had recovered about 35 pieces of axed deodar wood, which the department had kept near the forest guard hut. Police said that on the day of the incident, Naresh Kumar came to the spot with the intention of stealing that wood. At that time, a female van mitra was sleeping in the forest guard hut. "Drunk Naresh Kumar set the forest guard hut on fire using petrol. The van mitra and her brother escaped, officials said.
