Jammu, May 12 -- A soldier injured in Pakistan shelling along the International Border (IB) in RS Pura sector succumbed late on Saturday, taking the toll in Poonch-Rajouri areas since Wednesday to 24. Rifleman Sunil Kumar, a resident of Trewa village in Arnia sector, was deployed in RS Pura sector where he sacrificed his life in the line of duty, said a defence official. A pall of gloom descended at his native village as family, relatives and friends bid farewell to the braveheart, who was cremated with full military honours on Sunday, he added. Indian Air Force (IAF) assistant medical sergeant Surendra Kumar was also cremated at his native village in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. Surendra died during cross-border shelling at the Udhampur air base on Saturday, officials said. Jammu & Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha paid homage to Kumar and laid a wreath. "Paid tributes to the Army Braveheart Rfn Sunil Kumar, who laid down his life in the line of duty for the Nation. India will never forget his selfless service and supreme sacrifice," he said in a post on X. Sinha also paid tribute to Border Security Force (BSF) sub-inspector Muhammad Imteyaz, who died during cross-border firing in RS Pura. "Laid wreath and paid homage to BSF Braveheart Sub Inspector Md. Imteyaz, who made the supreme sacrifice during unprovoked firing by Pakistan. His valour and sacrifice will never be forgotten," he said on X. He visited the residence of Rajouri additional district development commissioner Raj Kumar Thapa, who died during shelling in Rajouri town. "Thapa's contribution to the processes of J&K's development is immense. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and numerous admirers in this hour of grief. I pray for peace of the departed soul," Sinha said....
