Srinagar, March 25 -- To minimise social contact amid novel coronavirus outbreak, the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar has suspended all congregational prayers and its management has appealed people to offer prayers at home.

"In the light of Islamic teachings and as is a precedent in Islamic history during such times, Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid appeals to people to offer namaz at home, as the corona virus pandemic spreads," the management body said in a statement.

Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid is the caretaking body of the mosque with Hurriyat leader and chief priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as its president. Mirwaiz is currently under house detention since August 5, last year, when the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked.
