Pilgrim dead, at least 9 injured as landslide hits Vaishno Devi track
Jammu, July 22 -- A landslide struck the old track to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, leaving one pilgrim dead and nine others injured, officials said.
The deceased, identified as Kuppan Srinivasan, 70, of Chennai, was critically injured, and succumbed to his injuries during the treatment, police said.
They said a booking office and an overhead iron structure caved in under the weight of the landslide, triggered by heavy rains which lashed Katra town, the base camp for the pilgrims visiting the shrine atop Trikuta hills.
The yatra to the shrine was suspended as a precautionary measure. However, pilgrimage was resumed via Tarakote Marg. The incident occurred around 8.30 am at Gulshan Ka Langar near Banganga, the starting point for the yatra where pony riders gather along the old track and register before taking the pilgrims to the shrine, 12km from the town.
After the incident, three people, including the deceased, were critically injured and seven people got minor injuries. All injured were taken to a hospital, the officiating chief executive officer of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Sachin Kumar Vaishya told reporters. Vaishya, who is also the district magistrate Jammu, rushed to the scene and said a rescue and debris clearance operation is underway. An earth-mover was also rushed to speed up the rescue efforts.
The critically injured, Kuppan Srinivasan, 70, of Chennai, succumbed to his injuries, while his wife K Radha, 66, and a pilgrim from Haryana Rajinder Bhalla, 70, are undergoing treatment at Narayan Hospital, while Leela Raikwar, 56, of Uttar Pradesh was admitted at the community health centre in Katra, the officials said.
Suresh Kumar, 66, of Maharashtra and two local residents Nikhil Thakur and Vicky Sharma were discharged after first aid.
J&K LG Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the incident, and said he is monitoring the situation. Another landslide blocked the new track near Himkoti Sunday night and efforts are ongoing to restore it.
"While Yatra on the traditional route via Banganga remains suspended pilgrims are now being guided via the Tarakote track after safety clearance," said a senior official of the shrine board.
A five-year-old student was killed and four children were injured when a landslide triggered by heavy rain led to a boulder piercing through a wall of the Government School in Bhainch panchayat area in Poonch district on Monday morning, police said.
Ehsan Ali, the son of Mohammad Razaq of Kalsian in Bhainch panchayat area, died on the spot. "A student was killed and four others were injured when a boulder came hurtling down a hill and pierced through the wall of the primary school building in Kalsian," said a senior police officer.
The injured students were rushed to the district hospital in Poonch. They were identified as Mohammad Safeer, 7, the son of Mohammad Shareef of Kalsian Bhainch, Bilal Farooq, 8, the son of Farooq Ahmed of Bhainch, Aftab Ahmed, 6, the son of Idress Ahmed of Bhainch, and Tabia Kouser, 7, the daughter of Basharat Hussain of Bhainch.
LG Sinha mourned the death of the schoolboy due to the rockslide.
The district commissioner Vikas Kundal on Monday visited Poonch hospital and enquired about the well being of students.
"DC visited the Maharaja Sukhdev Singh district hospital, where the children were being treated. He met with the victims and their families," said an official. DC also disbursed financial assistance under the Red Cross Fund, with Rs.1,00,000 provided to the family of the deceased child and Rs.50,000 each to the families of the injured children.
Poonch CEO has ordered the closure of all government, private schools on July 22 due to bad weather.
A police officer was injured on Monday after his car was hit by a landslide triggered by rain near here. The probationary DSP was on his way to his place of posting in Samba when the landslide damaged his car outside a tunnel near the Ban toll plaza in the Nagrota area along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the officials said. The officer was rescued and shifted to a hospital where his condition was stated to be stable, they said....
