Srinagar, April 30 -- The Pakistani forces resorted to unprovoked firing in the Baramulla, Kupwara and Jammu's Akhnoor sector along the Line of Control (LoC), prompting retaliation from the Indian side, army said on Tuesday. The Indian Army said the ceasefire on the intervening night of April 28 and 29 marks the fifth straight day of cross-border firing by the Pakistani forces. There has been an uptick in cross-LoC firing in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and the slew of measures from India and Pakistan that followed. No loss of life or property was reported in the latest truce violation. India and Pakistan share 735km LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. "During the night of April 28-29, Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small arms firing across the Line of Control in areas opposite Kupwara and Baramulla districts, as well as the Akhnoor sector. Indian Army responded in a measured and effective manner to the provocation," the army said in a statement. Though no loss of life or property has been reported in the incidents, it has struck panic among the residents of villages close to the LoC and International Border in Jammu as well as Kashmir. Before India and Pakistan renewed ceasefire agreement in 2021, Pakistan resorted to 4,645 violations along the LoC in 2020, according to official data. The number of violations was more than 5,100 if those along the IB are included. Ceasefire violations increased sharply between 2016 and 2021, recording a 10-fold jump.
