Jammuadmn bans inflammatory social media content
Jammu, April 18 -- The Jammu district administration on Friday imposed a blanket ban on posting or sharing communally sensitive and inflammatory content on social media sites for a period of 60 days.
Citing threat to public order and communal harmony, the administration in an order pointed out that social media platforms and similar digital platforms have been increasingly misused to spread communally provocative, false, and inciting content.
"Such content has the potential to disturb public peace, cause communal tensions and endanger lives and property. The dissemination of inflammatory content, morphed images, fabricated videos and false narratives throughsocial media have been identified as a significant threat to public order in sensitive districts such as Jammu," readthe order issued by Jammu deputy magistrate, Dr Rakesh Minhas.
"In exercise of the powers conferred under Section163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023(BNSS), I hereby order that posting, uploading, sharing or forwarding any content -- text, image, video, audio, meme, graphic or reel -- that promotes enmity, hatred or ill-will between communities on grounds of religion, race,caste, community, language or region is strictly prohibited within the territorial jurisdiction of district Jammu," the order read.
Violations would attractstringent action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000, with punishments ranging from fines to imprisonment, including up to life term inserious cases involving threats to national unity and integrity, it further warned....
