Infiltrators, UCC focus of Assam BJP manifesto
GUWAHATI, April 1 -- The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam on Tuesday released a 31-point 'sankalp-patra' (manifesto) for the April 9 assembly polls in the state which included promises to deport all illegal infiltrators, evict illegal settlers from encroached government land and implement uniform civil code (UCC).
The manifesto was released in the party's state head quarters in Guwahati by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the presence of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP state president Dilip Saikia and a large number of party leaders.
"Assam today is the one of fastest growing economies in India. I see a state that has transformed so much in 10 years under BJP rule which Congress couldn't achieve despite being in power for six decades," said Sitharaman.
"Due to the fast growth of the economy including the setting up of the semi-conductor plant in Jagiroad which has created around 27,000 jobs, Assamese who were working outside the state and abroad are choosing to come back," she added.
Sitharaman highlighted direct benefit transfer (DBT) schemes like Orunodoi through which around 4 million families are being given a sum of Rs.1,250 per month and also the move to provide land rights to 450,000 tea-garden workers.
CM Sarma said that one of the foremost tasks for the new BJP government would be to stringently use provisions of a 1950 law, the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam), Act (IEAA), which empowers district authorities to deport illegal foreigners within 24 hours of their detection.
"We promise to use this legislation more stringently and expel Bangladeshi Miyas daily in order to rid the state of them," he said. Miya is a pejorative term used in Assam for Bengali-speaking Muslims.
Legal provisions regard all those who entered Assam on or before March 24, 1971 (the date on which Bangladesh was formed) as Indian citizens, but Assam has witnessed entry of more illegals from Bangladesh even after that date.
Others like Bengali-speaking Hindus who also moved to Assam from Bangladesh on or before December 31, 2014 can become Indian citizens under provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)....
