JAMMU, Dec. 4 -- To take on the notorious liquor mafia in Jammu and Kashmir, excise department officials have to bank on their grit and lathis. The field staff that raids liquor mafia and destroys "lahan" to check illegal distillation does not have firearms and also face the risk of being attacked.
Lahan, a yellow coloured viscose is the raw material used for producing illicit liquor. It contains ethyl alcohol and has to be distilled on fire.
Jammu and Kashmir excise department, deputy commissioner, Amarjeet Singh said the field staff faces attacks and stone pelting by the Perna and Sansi communities involved into the illegal distillation of liquor in Kathua district.
