New Delhi, Jan. 15 -- A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi and two others under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, for hatching a conspiracy to wage war against the country and heading a terrorist organisation. The judgement was passed by additional sessions judge Chanderjit Singh. A detailed copy of the judgement was not available at the time of going to print. Andrabi, founder of the all-women separatist group Dukhtaraan-e-Millat (DeM, Daughters of the Nation), in 1987, and her two associates, Sofi Fehmeeda and Nahida Nasreen, guilty for offences under UAPA sections 18 (punishment for conspiracy) and 38 (offence relating to membership of a terrorist organisation). They were also convicted under several penal sections pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups, imputations and assertions prejudicial to national integration, conspiracy to wage war against the government and criminal conspiracy. The matter will now be heard next on January 17 when the arguments on the quantum of sentence will be heard. Aasiya and her associates were formally charged by a Special NIA judge of Patiala House Court in February 2021, following which they pled not guilty and were put on trial. The NIA had lodged a case against the convicts and their organisation, DEM in April 2018 on the directions of the Union home ministry. The federal agency stated in their FIR that Aasiya and her two associates were actively running a terrorist organisation which is proscribed under the First Schedule of the UAPA. The agency's case stated that the convicts were using various media platforms to spread insurrectionary imputations and hate speeches that endanger the integrity, security and sovereignty of India. The FIR stated that the Andrabi-led organisation openly advocated secession of Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India and called for jihad and violent activities against India.
