After harvesting wheat crop, villagers close to Pak border clean bunkers, stock essentials
Jammu, May 7 -- Amid escalating tensions between Indian and Pakistan in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, residents of villages close to the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region have harvested their wheat crops and are busy cleaning bunkers and stocking rations, cooking gas, medicines and other essential items to meet contingencies that may arise.
Centre has all states and Union territories to conduct mock drills on Wednesday.
Mohammad Hussain, 47, from Dera Dabsi village close to the LoC in Poonch, said, "Ceasefire violations are taking place regularly, but Indian army is here and that's why we have no fear. We have harvested our wheat crops."
Another villager, Ghulam Hassan, 42, said, "If Pakistan indulges in any aggression and tries to cross the LoC, it will get a stinging response from our army. This is our birthplace, and we would not hesitate to sacrifice our lives to protect it."
Hassan said Pakistan wanted to engineer a communal divide in J&K through the Pahalgam attack. "But we are one and will defeat their sinister designs," he added.
In RS Pura sector of Jammu district, Rohit Choudhary, 35, says, " harvesting was completed two days ago and now, people are stocking rations, medicines and other essential items. Call for mock drill has created fear among the people. They are withdrawing gold and cash from banks." Vikram Choudhary, 34, from Chandu Chak village right on the IB, said, "We have cleaned bunkers in the village. There is fear. Village elders say that war is not in anyone's favour as it brings destruction, poverty and hunger." He said around three days ago, BSF allowed the farmers to harvest their wheat crops beyond the barbed fence and up to zero line.
Jammu region shares around 200 km of IB and over 300-km LoC with Pakistan....
