India, March 23 -- The family was inconsolable and the atmosphere in their house was contagiously depressing. Anger added to grief when we learnt about the cause of the death; the boy had shot himself. It was hard to fathom that such a handsome, loving and jovial person could lose his purpose of living.

Civilisations die from suicide, not by murder. Increasing instances of suicide in society are testimony of our declining resilience quotient. Have we become so fragile that pinpricks force us to end our lives?

We've grown up hearing stories of farmers who've spent their lifetime clearing debt incurred by their grandfathers. And now we see farmers consume pesticide fearing the debt trap when their crop fails.
