Kolkata, Oct. 13 -- Three people were arrested on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a student of a private medical college in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district, police said even as chief minister Mamata Banerjee kicked off row with her remark that girls should not be allowed to go outside the campus at night. Police have also detained another person suspecting his role in the incident, officers aware of the case said. The police were yet to disclose the identities of the three arrested accused. "We arrested three persons in connection with the case this morning. They are being questioned. This is a very sensitive case and we will give out further details later," a police officer said. The West Bengal chief minister termed the gang rape in Durgapur in Paschim Bardhaman district as "shocking", and said that no accused would be spared. In her reaction to the incident, prior to the arrest of three suspects, Banerjee said, "I am shocked to see the incident, but private medical colleges also should take care of their students, and especially girls. The girls should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night. They have to protect themselves also," Mamata Banerjee said. The remark elicited shrap reactions from the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). "Mamata Banerjee should have some shame. The attitude of her government is that the facts have to be suppressed... They are hiding the medical report in this case. They will also hide whether the rape took place or not," BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul said. Police officers said that mobile phones of the three accused were also seized....
