'Waiver on hybrids can improve city revenue'
New Delhi, May 7 -- The Delhi government's decision to extend a 50% road tax waiver to "strong hybrid" vehicles under its new electric vehicle (EV) policy is expected to generate an additional annual revenue of Rs.300-400 crore by incentivising buyers to register the vehicles in Delhi rather than neighbouring states, according to ananalysis by the transport department.
The new EV policy categorises "strong hybrid" electric vehicles as those equipped with systems, such as stop-start functionality, regenerative braking and the ability to run on electric power independently under conditions.
While fully electric vehicles continue to receive a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees, strong hybrids will now be eligible for a partial exemption to encourage their adoption.
Data shared by the department shows that Delhi has consistently lagged behind neighbouring states in hybrid vehicle registrations over the past two years.
In 2025, Delhi recorded 7,765 strong hybrid registrations, lower than UP's 17,046 and Haryana's 9,357. A similar trend was observed in 2024, when Delhi registered 4,980 hybrid vehicles....
