Srinagar, Sept. 6 -- A group of people attacked the inauguration plaque of the renovated Hazratbal mosque with bricks and stones and tried to remove the national emblem from the stone, here on Friday. A war of words broke out between senior BJP leader and Waqf Board chairperson Darkshan Andrabi and National Conference (NC) legislator and chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq following the incident. NC chief spokesman and legislator Tanvir Sadiq said that in Islam idol worship is forbidden. "I'm not a religious scholar but in Islam, idol worship is strictly forbidden-the gravest of sins. The foundation of our faith is Tawheed (oneness of God) . Placing a sculpted figure, at the revered Hazratbal Dargah goes against this very belief. Sacred spaces must reflect only the purity of Tawheed, nothing else," he wrote on X. Sadiq later told media persons that he didn't provoke anybody and said if somebody has taken law in his own hands, they need to be educated instead of threatening to be booked under PSA. Waqf Board chairperson and senior BJP leader Darkshan Andrabi didn't address the emblem issue directly but blamed NC workers for the attack and sought FIR against NC legislator and PSA against those opposing the placing of the national emblem on the inauguration plaque. "I request Lt governor and DGP to arrest all those goons who created a scene at Dargah Hazratbal today. The case should also be registered against the legislator whose men were involved in the protest and whose tweet provoked the people," she said, adding that NC can't see another leader doing renovation of the shrines. "It's our job to renovate shrines and Dargahs and nobody can stop us." Andrabi equated the people who held protests as "terrorists" and said they have been doing this act for many years. "Ifthey aren't arrested. I will begin a hunger strike," she further said. The Waqf chairperson said that she undertook the renovation of Dargah Hazratbal and the job was completed with dedication and innovation. "The new renovation of Dargah is a wonder which has been not only appreciated by the people of J&K but received appreciation from all over India and across the globe. Unfortunately somepeople don't like this development." Andrabi was appointed as the Waqf Board chairperson by the centre as she is senior BJP leader and her post is equal to the Minister of State. She said that they wanted to keep Waqf above from politics, but the ruling party is trying to create mischief by trying to disturb peaceful enviornment of religious scared places. Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah lambasted Waqf chairperson for threatening protectors with PSA. "Attempts to monumentalise egos inside Hazratbal are not acts of devotion but of arrogance. A sacred place that has stood for centuries needs no one's nameplate for legitimacy. People were rightly offended by this dangerous attempt to play with religious sensitivities for self-glorification. Hazratbal has seen reconstructions before, but never were such means used to claim credit. Any talk of using PSA in this case only adds insult to injury. It is foolish, unacceptable, and an assault on people's attachment with their beloved shrine," Aga Ruhullah wrote on X. PDP leader Iltija Mufti said labelling protestors as "terrorists" as punitive mindset of BJP. "Labelling Kashmiris as 'terrorists' just because they expressed their anger on something which hurt their religious sentiments & asking police to slap them with PSA reflects BJPs punitive & communal mindset. The Waqf board should certainly have been more mindful & sensitive. It seems that Muslims are being deliberately being provoked," she wrote on X....
