Year of accidents: School collapse, bus fire, ICU blaze
Jaipur, Jan. 1 -- As 2024 dawned with the deaths of 18 people after a truck collided with a LPG tanker triggering a fireball on the Jaipur-Kishangarh highway on December 20, a spate of such terrible accidents in 2025 continued to claim several more lives untimely.
Two fatal vehicle clashes in Phalodi and Jaipur only a day apart killed more than 30 people while seven children have been killed after a government school building collapsed in Jhalawar. Eight patients at the state's top government medical college were also killed after a fire that sparked from a short circuit engulfing the entire ICU.
At least seven minor students lost their lives and 28 others sustained injuries after a portion of a government upper primary school building collapsed in Piplodi village of Rajasthan's Jhalawar district on July 25 morning. The tragedy occurred while students were gathering for morning prayers
The victims were identified as Payal (14), Priyanka (14), Harish (8), Sona Bhai (5), and Mithun (11) - all from the Bhil community; Kartik (18) from the Lodha community; and Meena (8). All were residents of Piplodi.
At least eight patients were killed due to suffocation after a massive fire that broke out at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sawai Man Singh Hospital's trauma centre late on the night of October 5, said officials.
In a statement, the health department said, the fire broke out due to a short-circuit at an attached store room of the ICU which is located at the second floor of the trauma centre.
A private AC sleeper bus was travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur when it caught fire around 3.30pm on October 14. Nineteen passengers were charred to death, while one more died on the way to Jodhpur. So far, 25 people have lost their lives in the bus fire tragedy while 13 have been injured.
Following the inspection, it was found that the bus was structurally unsafe, with major violations of safety standards.
At least 15 people were killed while two others were injured when a traveller bus collided with a trailer parked on the Bharatmala highway (NH-15) in Phalodi on November 2 evening.
"The bus was approaching at a very high speed. The collision happened when it tried to overtake a truck and lost control. The collision was so intense that the bus' front portion was completely smashed and 15 people died on the spot," said Mathoda inspector, Amana Ram.
Only a day after the Phalodi's accident, at least 13 people were killed and 10 others were injured after a speeding dumper truck, allegedly driven by a man under the influence of alcohol, rammed into over a dozen vehicles in Jaipur on November 3.
The incident took place near Loha Mandi in Harmada area at around 1pm. Prima facie, the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was detained immediately and his truck was seized.
It hit 17 vehicles before coming to a halt, police said....
