Will end illegal felling of Khejri trees: Govt
BIKANER, Feb. 14 -- The Government of Rajasthan on Thursday night ordered an immediate halt to the felling of Khejri trees and assured that it will bring a dedicated protection law in the ongoing Budget session of the assembly, leading to the suspension of the Paryavaran Bachao Mahapadav staged outside Bishnoi Dharamshala near district collectorate in Bikaner.
The directive, issued by revenue department secretary Dr Jogaram on February 12, addressed to all district collectors reads that the state government has decided to bring a special law for the protection of Khejri, considering its cultural significance and distinct identity in Rajasthan. It further notes that the chief minister announced in the assembly on February 5, that a law would be introduced in the current session and implemented at the earliest. Until then, collectors have been instructed to take effective steps to prevent illegal cutting of Khejri trees.
State minister for industries- KK Bishnoi reached the protest site late on Thursday along with other public representatives and displayed the official order before demonstrators, formally conveying the government's stand. He said the administration had already built consensus on a stringent legal framework and that all procedural aspects were being examined before tabling the Bill in the House. Until then, he added, field authorities have been made accountable for preventing any illegal felling.
Announcing the suspension of the protest, Paryavaran Sangharsh Samiti convenor Ram Gopal Bishnoi described the government's order as a result of collective pressure and public unity. If the proposed law lacks strength or intent, we will return to the Mahapadav, he said....
