Water from MP's Gandhi Sagar Dam to be released next week
Jaipur, May 1 -- The release of approximately 892 million cubic metres (MCM) of water from Madhya Pradesh's Gandhi Sagar Dam to Rajasthan's Rana Pratap Sagar Dam is expected to begin as early as next week.
A senior official familiar with the development said that the move follows the Rajasthan government's approval in response to Madhya Pradesh's request, aimed at lowering the Gandhi Sagar water level to make way for a proposed pumped storage project. The decision marks a crucial step in advancing Madhya Pradesh's energy infrastructure plans.
"In this regard, the chief engineer of the water resources department, Madhya Pradesh, had written a letter to the water resources department of Rajasthan on March 29, 2025. The letter requested the Rajasthan government to lower the water level of the Gandhi Sagar Dam. As of April 25, the water level of the Gandhi Sagar Dam stands at 395.003 metres," he said.
The official informed under the Chambal river system, Rajasthan houses the Rana Pratap Sagar Dam, Jawahar Sagar Dam, and Kota Barrage, all of which have limited water storage capacities.
Minister of water resources, Suresh Singh Rawat said, "The water stored in the Rana Pratap Sagar Dam will prove useful in meeting drinking water, irrigation, and industrial needs during the upcoming summer season. The dam will also ensure the proper utilisation of water for power generation."
"This decision reflects our government's farsighted policy, understanding of water needs, and spirit of mutual cooperation. Coordination between the two states will continue in the future as well for the effective management and utilization of water resources," he said....
