Villagers call off stir against tiger attacks in Ranthambore
Jaipur, June 11 -- A day after protests began in Sawai Madhopur over the death os 70-year-old watchman by a tiger near Ranthambhore Fort, agriculture minister Kirodi lal Meena assured the villagers of additional compensation to the family of the deceased and also urged the protesters to visit Jaipur for discussion with chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. Meanwhile, the cubs of tigress Arrowhead could not be traced.
The victim, Radheshyam Mali who was a resident of Sherpur village and a guard at the Jain temple near the Trinetra Ganesh Mandir for nearly three decades, was attacked around 4.30am when he stepped out to relieve himself. According to Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR) field director Anoop KR, the body was recovered about 30 to 40 metres from the temple, following a trail of blood. In response, the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve administration has installed additional camera traps in the fort area to locate them.
On the relocation of Arrowhead's cubs, a senior forest official said: "The NTCA has approved the move. Efforts are currently underway to locate the cubs, following which attempts will be made to tranquilise them and relocate them through a scientific process. To aid in the search, 15 additional camera traps have been installed in the fort area.The post-mortem report of the deceased is still awaited." "Meanwhile, hair samples have been sent to the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bengaluru, for DNA analysis to identify the tiger. The NCBS already holds DNA records of many big cats, including Arrowhead and her cubs," the official added.
On the second day of the protest by the villagers, Kirori Lal Meena reached the protest site and held discussions with the villagers. Along with their eight-point demands, there was also an open discussion on other issues arising from the Ranthambhore National Park. After speaking with the villagers and the family members, he assured them of providing financial compensation of Rs.25 lakh from his own level. He also promised to help secure a contractual job.
Besides, a 20-member committee of villagers was formed to represent other demands. The minister invited the committee members to visit his residence in Jaipur, where he said he would discuss all pending issues with the CM, state forest minister, and Union forest minister, and make every possible effort to get the rightful demands fulfilled....
