U-19 woman cricketer held in hit and run
Jaipur, Dec. 5 -- An under-19 cricketer of state women's cricket team was detained on Wednesday night after her allegedly speeding four-wheeler struck at least three two-wheelers on the assembly road near Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha, killing a 23-year-old man on the spot and seriously injuring another, police said, adding the accused secured a bail on Thursday morning.
ACP Traffic (South), Ameer Hussain Ahmed, said, "The incident took place at around 10.15pm on Tuesday night. The car was being run at a very high speed due to which it lost control and hit three two-wheelers at the assembly road. Following which the passengers of the car fled the spot, abandoning the car."
According to police, the car was heading towards the Rajasthan Cricket Academy (RCA) at SMS Stadium from Jagatpura. "The car is registered in the name of Priya Choudhary who runs a reputed cricket academy in the city. However, her daughter, Bhavya Choudhary (18), who is also part of the state women's cricket team (U-19), was behind the wheel at the time of the accident," said Ahmed.
After a primary investigation, police suspect that Bhavya was driving the car at 70-80 km/hour. A purported CCTV footage from the assembly road also showed the car approaching at speed, hitting three scooters, mowing down one and fleeing.
"The scooter driver Paras Jain (23), a law-student, was killed on the spot while his relative Nandini Sharma (26) sustained serious injuries on her legs and was rushed to the SMS hospital for treatment," said Ahmed.
According to police, Bhavya's car also dragged Paras for about 500 metres on the road after it hit his scooter. "Later, she abandoned the car near a lane and fled the spot. We formed teams to search for her. We detained her from her house on Wednesday night," said the officer.
A case was lodged against the car driver under Section 106 (negligent driving) of BNS on Wednesday morning. "However, she applied for a bail in the trial court on Thursday morning which was granted. Court has directed her to cooperate with the police...," he said.
"We are questioning Bhavya. Her mother will also be interrogated on how she was allowed to drive a car and whether Bhavya had a license. Further probe is underway," said Ahmed....
