Truck mows down 4 pilgrims on Delhi-Mumbai expressway: Cops
Bharatpur, Sept. 7 -- At least four pilgrims have been mowed down by a truck at Delhi-Mumbai expressway in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur on Saturday, said officials.
Sawai madhopur SP, Anil Beniwal said, "The incident took place at around 5 pm on Saturday on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway when the four pilgrims along with some others were walking towards Lalsot. The truck was overspeeding, lost control and mowed down all four."
According to police, the area comes under Bonli. "The victims are natives of Lalsot's Chimanpura village in Dausa. They came to visit the Bhedoli Ashrama in Sawai Madhopur's Bonli on Saturday morning and were returning home when the accident happened. There were seven people from the same village," said SP.
"It is not yet clear where the truck was coming from but it was carrying loads of onions," said police.
Following the development, the truck driver parked the vehicle on the expressway and fled the spot immediately. "He is still absconding. We have formed teams to nab him. The truck owner is also trying to be traced," said Beniwal.
Meanwhile, the victims were rushed to a hospital where they all were declared dead. "Bodies have been sent for an autopsy. They could not be identified yet. An FIR is being lodged against the truck driver for negligent driving. Further probe is underway," he said....
