Trader hurt in botched robbery bid, say police
Bharatpur, Nov. 14 -- A 25-year-old shopkeeper was seriously injured after he was hit by a stray bullet during an alleged botched robbery in Bharatpur's Rupwas town on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.
According to additional superintendent of police Hariram Kumawat, the incident occurred when jeweller Dheeraj Raghuvanshi (25) was allegedly attacked by a group of four unidentified bike-borne assailants while returning home in the evening from his store with a bag of gold ornaments.
In a bid to keep the contents of the bag from the attackers, Raghuvanshi allegedly threw it in the direction of the victim, Arun Goyal's grocery shop, following which the attackers allegedly opened fire with three rounds, one of which hit Goyal in the cheek, added Kumawat.
The sequence of events was confirmed by market CCTV footage, said the ASP, adding that the victim was currently under treatment at Raj Bahadur Memorial District hospital, where he was reportedly in a stable condition.
On Thursday morning, traders at the town market staged a sit-in protest at Mahadev Chauk and refused to open their shops in solidarity with the family of the victim.
Independent MLA from Bayana Ritu Banawat joined the protest, which was withdrawn peacefully after intervention by senior police officers.
""I will stand with the people - whether they want to keep markets closed or launch an agitation. The culprits must be arrested soon," she said.
A formal complaint was lodged by Raghuvanshi under section 109 (attempted murder) and other relevant sections of the BNS on Thursday, said police, adding that investigation was ongoing....
