Time to man up, Bollywood?
India, June 22 -- How many Hindi films can you recall that revolved around men's rights and crimes against men?
Taking some time to remember, isn't it? Okay, now replace the 'men' with 'women' in that question, and there you go. Since its inception, Bollywood has leaned in favour of highlighting the plight of women through songs and films. Rightfully so, given the oppression the fairer sex has had to face for long. But why do films - and society - discount crimes perpetrated against the opposite gender?
Dialogues such as "mard ko dard nahin hota," have not helped either, making it an almost cruel expectation from men. The expressions of men's pain and stress is either ignored or treated as comedy fodder in films.
In real life, crimes against men have been taking a ghastly turn. The most recent being the sensational case of Sonam Raghuvanshi and her friend Raj Kushwaha killing her husband Raja Raghuvanshi in cold blood, to the infamous blue drum case, where the husband's body was dumped after being chopped by his wife and lover.
In the absence of any men's commission or pro-men laws, is reel and real ignorance it for men?
All this and more has been discussed by Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor, Lifestyle and Entertainment, on her show MiPhi presents The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, this week.
Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, who has been actively working for the cause of men's rights for years now, also shares her take on the film industry's apathy, apart from the rising domestic abuse cases against men.
A new episode of MiPhi presents The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra drops every Friday at 7pm across Hindustan Times, Hindustan and Mint's YouTube channels. Don't miss it!htc...
