Udaipur/ Barmer, June 14 -- Siblings Shubh Modi and Shagun Modi from Udaipur were among the 241 people killed when Air India Flight AI-171 to London's Gatwick Airport crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. The siblings were heirs to a prominent marble business in the city. Their uncle Satish Kumar said that Shubh, 24, had completed his B.Tech in chemical engineering from the United States, while his sister Shagun, 22, had pursued her BA-BBA from Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Both were actively involved in managing their father Sanjiv Modi's business. "DNA samples of the victims' parents were taken on Friday, and the further procedure is underway," said Kumar. He added that his last meeting with Shubh was two days prior to the incident, during which Shubh spoke about his upcoming trip to London. The Modi family originally hails from Jodhpur. Sanjiv Modi's mother and sister reside in Ahmedabad. A day before the crash, Shubh and Shagun had left Udaipur for Ahmedabad with their driver and reached the airport the next day. A 20-year-old medical student from Barmer at the BJ Medical College, who was at the hostel when the incident occured,died when the flight, which had taken off only 33 seconds ago, slammed into the building, causing a portion of the mess wall to collapse, said his cousin Mangalram Choudhary. The deceased succumbed to severe burns and injuries he suffered from the impact of debris, he added. Jaiprakash Choudhary, a second-year-student at the college, hailed from Bor Charanan village in Dhorimanna block subdivision of Barmer. His remains were handed over to his family on Friday afternoon, said his cousin. Mangalram Chaudhary added that the deceased was the son of a farmer and daily wage labourer who was educated through taking several loans.
