Jaipur/ Barmer, July 20 -- At least 10 people have been killed across Rajasthan in the last 24 hours while schools were also shut in six districts on Saturday as a heavy rainfall continued to batter the state, said officials. Of the ten deceased, three each died in Ajmer's Kishangarh and Pali districts on Saturday, two in Bikaner, and another one in Balotra on Friday night, while a four-year-old boy drowned in a drain on Saturday when he turned out of the house while playing roadside in Sawai Madhopur. "Three girls, all of whom were 18-year-old, died in Kishangarh on Saturday morning after they drowned in a local canal that overflew due to heavy rainfall. The three and another girl went to bathe their cattle. Two of them suddenly slipped and were swept away when the other two went to save them. The locals rescued the four but three of them died on the spot and the another girl is undergoing treatment in a local hospital," said an official from the Ajmer district administration. In Rajikawas Khurd village in Pali district, a 60-year-old man drowned while trying to save a 14-year-old boy. According to Marwar Junction SHO Bharat Singh Rawat, "Narpat - an orphan living with the elderly man, Kunji Lal, on his farm - fell into a pond on Friday night. Kunji Lal jumped in to rescue him, but both drowned due to the depth of the water. Upon receiving the information, police reached the spot and recovered the bodies." In a separate case in Pali city, the body of an unidentified man, estimated to be around 40 years old, was found floating in the Lakhotia Pond late Friday evening. Industrial Nagar police station ASI Sampat Kumar said, "The body was recovered with the help of divers and taken to Bangar Hospital's mortuary. No identification was found on the deceased, and efforts are underway to establish his identity." In Bikaner's Kolayat area, two minor sisters died after slipping into a deep water-filled pit while playing and bathing in rainwater on Friday evening. The victims - Sarla (9) and Avni (6), daughters of Bhanwardan Charan of Chak Kanya Bandha - were accompanied by their third sister, who tried to rescue them but failed. She then ran to alert the villagers. Post-mortem examinations were conducted at Kolayat Hospital, after which the bodies were handed over to the family. A 45-year-old man, Gena Ram, from Khejdiyali village in Balotra district, drowned after losing his balance near the edge of a rain-filled pond on Friday evening. Hearing his cries, nearby residents rushed to help and informed authorities. A rescue operation was launched by local divers and Civil Defence teams, who recovered the body within an hour. It was later placed in the mortuary at Samdari Hospital. Amid a spate of disasters, the district administrations in six districts including in Bundi, Ajmer, Baran, Kota, Jhalawar, and Rajsamand also declared to keep the school shut as the heavy downpour battered the districts. After incessant rainfall in the last three days, a flood-like situation was created in Ajmer. Over 1,000 residences in the district's Pushkar areas got waterlogged while many colonies were flooded on Saturday. The district collector Lok Bondhu took a visit to many vulnerable areas and directed the officials to quickly drain out the water in those areas using pumps.
