Survey ordered on crop damage caused by rain
Jaipur, March 22 -- Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Saturday ordered all the district collectors to conduct an immediate survey of crop loss, in view of the widespread damage to standing and harvested Rabi crops across several districts due to the unseasonal rains and hailstorm in the last two days.
"The chief minister is concerned about the loss of our farmers. He has directed all the collectors to conduct a survey of the damaged crops so far this season. They were directed to submit a detailed report immediately following which the government will provide the farmers with suitable compensation," said the chief minister's office in a statement on Saturday.
The constant unseasonal rainfall and hailstorm for the last two days caused widespread damage to standing and harvested rabi crops across several districts, prompting the state government to initiate damage assessment and relief measures.
The state government has urgently conducted a meeting following the development on Friday and has extended insurance coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to include post-harvest losses.
According to the agriculture department, crops kept in fields for drying after harvest will be eligible for claims if damaged within 14 days due to rain or natural calamities. Farmers must report losses within 72 hours through the Agriculture Rakshak portal, helpline 14447, insurance companies, banks, or local agriculture offices.
The unseasonal rains continued even on Saturday as several districts in eastern Rajasthan received light to moderate rain following which the temperature also dropped by 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, said the India Meteorological Department.
According to the meteorological department, Jhunjhunu's Mandawa received the highest rainfall at 18mm in the last 24 hours followed by 15mm in Tonk's Uniara, 13mm in Bundi's Nainwa, 12mm in Dausa's Baswa, 9mm in Dholpur's Badi, 6mm in Bharatpur's Nadbai, 4mm in Bharatpur's Weir, Kherli, and Jhunjhunu's Nawalgarh, 3 mm in Jhunjhunu city, and 2.5 mm in Hanumangarh's Sangaria.
"Another weak western disturbance may bring light rain or drizzle to Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions along with several districts of Shekhawati region on Sunday. A light to moderate rain is also likely in Barmer and Jaisalmer. However, the weather in rest of the parts in the state may remain dry," said IMD in its official statement.
It added: "An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Rajasthan & adjoining Pakistan at 1.5km above mean sea level. A trough runs along Long. 88degE to the north of Lat. 22degN between 3.1 & 5.8km above mean sea level. Subtropical westerly Jet Stream with core winds of the order of 70 knots at 12.6km above mean sea level prevails over East India. A fresh feeble Western Disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from 26th March 2026. The induced upper air cyclonic circulation over Haryana at 1.5km above mean sea level has become less marked. The trough from upper air cyclonic circulation over Haryana to North Gujarat across Rajasthan at 1.5km above mean sea level has become less marked."
The officials also said that the rain provided people a temporary respite from the heat as the average temperature was reported at 26 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius in most of the areas, which is 2 to 8 degrees below the normal temperature.
On Saturday, the maximum temperature of 31.1 degrees Celsius was recorded in Alwar's Vanasthali followed by 30.8 degrees Celsius in Pali's Jawai Dam area, 30.6 degrees Celsius in Jaisalmer, 30.5 degrees Celsius in Barmer, and 30.4 degrees Celsius in Pali city.
Meanwhile, the lowest temperature of 9.1 degrees Celsius was recorded in Mt Abu followed by 11.2 degrees Celsius in Sirohi city, 12.9 degrees Celsius in Alwar city, 13.6 degrees Celsius in Dausa, and 13.8 degrees Celsius in Karauli....
