Jaipur, June 22 -- Student leader Nirmal Chaudhary was arrested while the Congress MLA Nirmal Chaudhary was detained by police from the Rajasthan University campus early on Saturday morning when they went to appear for the exam, said officials. A purported video of the incident that went viral on the social media, showed that some police staff, wearing plain dress, arrived at the university campus in the morning, opened the collapsable gate, caught both Chaudhary and Poonia, and pushed them in a car while a clash also erupted with some other students who went to get them released. However, the police said that Chaudhary was arrested in a three-year-old case while they also denied Poonia's detention. The Gandhi nagar DSP, Narayan Bajiya said, "Chaudhary was arrested in connection to a case back in 2022 which was registered under section 186 (obstructing a public servant discharging duty) and 353 (assaulting or using criminal force on a public servant). A DSP was also seriously injured by Chaudhary in this case. However, we did not detain or arrest Poonia. He, himself, forcibly entered the police van when we went to arrest Chaudhary." He also added: "Poonia left the police station a few while later. However, Chaudhary is still in our custody and necessary action will be taken against him." According to the officials, both Chaudhary and Poonia had arrived at the university on Saturday to appear for their fourth-semester Philosophy examination. Both Chaudhary and Poonia later shared posts and videos of the incident on social media, accusing the police of acting without proper procedure and obstructing students during an official examination. In a social media post, Chaudhary alleged that he was being followed by police in plain clothes since morning. "This shows the hooliganism of Rajasthan Police in the way they arrested me and Sangaria MLA Abhimanyu Poonia from the university's examination centre premises when we went to give the exam. This hooliganism of the police administration is a dangerous signal for the common people. The police are coming without uniforms and causing obstruction in the ongoing examination." Meanwhile, after being released from the police station, Poonia pledged to continue the fight against injustice despite the police action. "Both me and Chaudhary have been forcefully arrested in an unconstitutional way by the police from the campus. This has nothing to do with the 2022 case rather they harassed us for our protest for the last few days over the death of the 30-year-old resident doctor, Rakesh Bishnoi, by suicide on June 13 due to a harassment by his senior in a Jodhpur government medical college." In response to their arrest, Congress leaders and RLP chief Beniwal, slammed the government for allegedly shutting the voices of the opposition. The former CM Ashok Gehlot said, "Detaining Youth Congress State President and MLA Poonia and Choudhary while giving the exam is unjust and a violation of democracy. The BJP government first did not even listen to the family of Dr. Rakesh Vishnoi and when these public representatives protested with him for justice, a case was registered against them. Public representatives have the right to raise their voice in public interest. The state government should release them immediately." Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot also said, "Congress leaders have been protesting over Bishnoi's death for a long time. had the government taking a suitable action long back, they did not have to take this way. But, it is really disappointing how the government is taking action against the protesters."...
