State reels from fog, severe cold
Jaipur, Jan. 7 -- Rajasthan witnessed the densest fog of the season along with severe cold conditions on Tuesday, disrupting normal life across large parts of the state. Dense to very dense fog prevailed till around 10am in more than 15 districts, including Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota and Bharatpur, severely reducing visibility and leading to multiple road accidents, transport disruptions and emergency administrative measures.
In Bharatpur district, a woman was crushed to death by a trailer at Gahnauli around 8 am while she was crossing the road near her house. The accident, attributed to poor visibility caused by thick fog. In Jaipur district's Chomu area, a Scorpio and an Eeco car collided due to foggy conditions, leaving two people injured. Similar fog-related accidents were reported from northern Rajasthan, including Sri Ganganagar, where a sleeper bus and a car collided on the Suratgarh-Bikaner National Highway.
In Jodhpur, the body of a 60-year-old sadhu was found at Luni railway station. Police suspect the elderly man died during the night due to extreme cold, though his identity has not yet been established.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Jaipur, minimum temperatures dipped further across the state, tightening winter's grip. Dungarpur recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 3.0 degree Celsius, making it the coldest place in Rajasthan during the past 24 hours. The met department has forecast dry weather for the next one week. However, during the next 2-3 days, dense to very dense fog is likely during morning hours in parts of the state. Minimum temperatures may fall further by 1 to 2 degree Celsius, increasing the possibility of cold wave conditions in northern Rajasthan.
