Jaipur, Oct. 2 -- Following reports of children falling seriously ill after consuming Dextromethorphan HBr Syrup, Rajasthan on Wednesday immediately halted supply of all cough syrups in the state, officials said. Director of Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation (RMSC), Jay Singh said all cough syrups in the state are now undergoing fresh quality checks. The medicine, supplied by the company under purchase orders since June 2025, has already been given to over 1.64 lakh patients. Health authorities stated that no complaints were received before September 28, but around the second week of September, seven children in Banswara fell seriously ill after consuming the syrup and had to be hospitalized. Dr Praveen Gupta, district program manager of RMSC, said that Banswara received 50,000 doses, of which 13,000 were distributed to health centres and the remaining 37,000 were stored in the warehouse. Following directives from higher authorities, all distribution and use of the medicine have been stopped as a precaution, even though the problematic batch was not supplied to the district. An official release states, the health department formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter. On September 28, complaints regarding batch KL-25/147 were received from Bharatpur, and on September 29, 2025, regarding batch KL-25/148 from Sikar. Symptoms reported included vomiting, drowsiness, anxiety, dizziness, restlessness, and fainting. RMSC has halted the use of all batches supplied under the purchase order by the supplier.
