SMS Docs remove About 2.1-metre hairball from girl's stomach
Jaipur, May 30 -- The doctors at Sawai Man Singh Hospital on Thursday removed a 2.1-metre-long trichobezoar (hairball) from the stomach of a 14-year-old girl, officials familiar with the matter said.
"The minor, resident of Barara village in Uttar Pradesh, is suffering from a psychological condition known as Pica, where a person eats non-edible substances. She was brought to SMS hospital after she experienced abdominal pain and vomiting for over a month," Dr Jeevan Kankaria, who performed the surgery, said. "Upon examination, we found a hard mass in her abdomen stretching from the stomach to the navel and the upper right part of the abdomen."
Dr Kankaria and his team performed an emergency laparotomy. The complex operation lasted about two hours. "The girl is in stable condition and recovering well." He said the case would be recorded as a medical milestone, as the trichobezoar was entangled throughout the small intestine. "The previous record of such hairball stood at 180 cm," he added....
