Jodhpur, Feb. 5 -- A joint committee set up by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has uncovered serious sewage contamination in the sacred pond of Shri Kalyan Rai Ji Temple in Jhalawar district, and recommended pipelines with reflux valves as a permanent fix. The committee submitted its report to the NGT on Monday, following orders issued during a hearing on a petition filed by the Shri Kalyan Rai Ji Temple Committee on September 25 last year. The NGT had directed the formation of a panel with a nominee of the Jhalawar district collector and a representative nominated by the member secretary of the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board. According to the report, "Outside the temple's premises, near its entrance on the opposite side of the road, there is an open municipal drain carrying the city's domestic sewage for treatment/disposal. The water from the nearby surface water body, Gomti Talab, continuously flows into the sacred pond located inside the temple's premises near its entrance through an ancient built water channel." The joint committee's members suggested that a piping system along with a reflux valve should be installed to prevent the backflow of sewage water from the municipal drain into the sacred pond, "thus preventing contamination of the pond water of the temple and resulting in a permanent solution to the problem."...
