Jaipur, May 8 -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld BJP MLA Kanwarlal Meena's three-year jail term for threatening an official at gunpoint and asked him to surrender in two weeks. While hearing a special leave petition by Meena against a Rajasthan high court order upholding a trial court order convicting Meena, a three judge bench of justice Vikram Nath, justice Sanjay Karol and justice Sandeep Mehta upheld the Rajasthan high court order. Meena has been accused of putting a gun to the head of Anta SDM Ramniwas Mehta and threatening to kill him, on January 3, 2005. Meena along with villagers reached the SDM's office to stage a dharna to demand a recount in the deputy sarpanch election in Khatakhedi. He also threatened IAS probationer Preetam B Yashwant and the tehsildar and broke the camera of the government videographer. On December 14, 2020, the Jhalawar ADJ court sentenced Meena to three years imprisonment. Meena challenged the verdict in the HC which on May 2 upheld the lower court order. The HC said that as an elected representative, Meena was expected to maintain law and order but he himself disrupted it. The court observed that Meena has 15 other cases against him and though he has been acquitted in some cases, his criminal disposition cannot be ignored. The court had asked the MLA to surrender. However, Meena filed a plea in the SC which during hearing on Monday, gave a stay on his surrender. With the verdict, the BJP MLA from Anta constituency, now faces disqualification from the Rajasthan assembly. On Wednesday, assembly speaker Vasudev Devnani too sought legal opinion in the matter....
