Ruckus in Assembly on major crop losses in Raj
Jaipur, Sept. 5 -- The Rajasthan Assembly on Thursday witnessed uproarious scenes as Congress legislators cornered the BJP-led government over large-scale crop losses caused by excessive rainfall. Demanding immediate relief and compensation for farmers, the Opposition accused the ruling party of gross negligence and indifference to rural distress.
During zero hour, disaster relief minister Kirodi Lal Meena responded to adjournment motions on crop damage, assuring the House that affected farmers would be given "appropriate compensation."
However, his remarks triggered protests from the Opposition benches. Amidst the commotion, Congress MLA Ashok Chandna attempted to speak without the Speaker's permission, leading to a heated exchange with speaker Vasudev Devnani. Ruling party members objected strongly, sparking a verbal spat between BJP and Congress legislators.
As the uproar intensified, the Speaker adjourned proceedings at 12.34 pm until 2pm.
When the House resumed, Congress legislators stormed into the well, shouting slogans and waving banners demanding relief for farmers. Despite repeated appeals for calm, the ruckus continued. The Speaker said, "The minister gave his reply, but you chose not to listen. Entering the well and misbehaving will not be tolerated."
Earlier, Congress MLAs Amit Chachan and Narendra Budania lashed out at the government, saying that lakhs of acres of standing crops had been ruined due to incessant rains.
"The situation is grim. Farmers' ripe crops have been destroyed. Yet, the government has not taken stock. Instead, ministers are busy flying around in helicopters while farmers await compensation," Budania alleged.
The protests spilled outside the House as well. Led by Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, Congress MLAs staged a demonstration in the Assembly complex. Jully arrived on a tractor at the western gate, but was stopped by security personnel. After a brief scuffle, the legislators marched on foot to the Assembly's entry gate, carrying damaged crop samples and placards, and raising slogans against the government.
Speaking to reporters, Jully said, "Farmers have lost their crops twice this year, yet no Girdawari (crop loss survey) has been ordered. Warehouses are flooded, towns like Bhiwadi are submerged, but the government remains unconcerned. The chief minister was in the House today; we expected an announcement, but he left without a word. Farmers need a relief package immediately."
Despite the chaos, three bills were passed during the brief sittings - The Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (amendment) bill 2025; The Factories (Rajasthan amendment) bill 2025; and The Rajasthan Goods and Services Tax (second amendement) bill 2025. The Assembly could function for only 33 minutes in its second session before being adjourned until Monday....
