RSHRC flags risk of contaminated drinking water, issues directions
Jaipur, Jan. 8 -- The Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission (RSHRC), Jaipur, on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the risk posed by contaminated drinking water and issued detailed directions to the state government and related departments to ensure the supply of clean and potable water to citizens across Rajasthan.
Taking suo motu cognisance, the Commission, referring to recent reports of deaths and hospitalisation of several people due to contaminated water supply in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, described the incident as alarming and a serious warning for all states, including Rajasthan.
It directed the Public Health Engineering Department and the state government to conduct thorough inspections of all water sources and pipelines, ensure proper chlorination as per prescribed standards and completely prevent mixing of sewer water with drinking water lines. The commission also ordered the launch of special drives in every district to keep drinking water fit for human consumption and "life-giving, not toxic".
Notices have been issued to the concerned authorities, and a compliance report has been sought to be presented before the commission on February 16....
