Jaipur, Nov. 4 -- The state government on Monday announced a Rs.10 lakh compensation to the families of the 15 victims of Sunday's bus-trailer collision in Phalodi, a senior minister said.
Speaking to reporters in Jaipur, education minister and Phalodi minister-in-charge Madan Dilawar said, "There were 18 passengers in the bus- out of whom 15 were killed. It was a case of negligence on the part of both the bus driver and the trailer driver. The state government has decided to provide families of the deceased a sum of Rs.10 lakh, and Rs.2 lakh to the families of those injured."
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, the families of the victims staged a protest on the Bharatmala highway, demanding immediate action against the culprits and a Rs.25 lakh compensation to each family, officials aware of the matter said.
The protest ended after the government's announcement of the ex-gratia and the initiation of an anti-encroachment drive on the highway at around 11am, officials said, adding that the roadside dhaba where the trailer was parked was demolished as part of the drive.
According to inspector attached with the Mathoda police station, Amana Ram, "District officials are identifying other such encroachments on the highway to prevent future accidents."
"The trailer was also illegally parked at the spot, as there are stipulated parking areas for heavy vehicles. We lodged a complaint against the trailer's driver and owner earlier today," he added.
The complaint was lodged under section 281 (negligent driving) of the BNS, said police, adding that both the trailer and the wreckage of the bus were seized following the accident.
Earlier, on Sunday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs.200,000 under the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for families of the deceased.
