RNT college authorities booked over doc's death
Udaipur, June 24 -- Days after the death of a 35-year-old doctor due to electrocution in RNT Medical College, Udaipur, a first information report (FIR) was registered on Monday accusing the staff of the college, hospital and hostel of negligence.
Dr Ravi Sharma was electrocuted on June 19 while using a water cooler at the PG hostel of the Ravindranath Tagore (RNT) Medical College.
On the basis of a complaint filed by the deceased's uncle on Sunday, Devikishan Sharma, at Hathipole Police Station, the police on Monday registered a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence and initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to the FIR, multiple prior complaints were made regarding the water cooler in the PG hostel that eventually caused Sharma's death. "Residents had warned the hostel, college, and hospital authorities both individually and collectively about electric current leaking from the cooler. Despite this, no corrective action was taken. There was neither any repair work done nor warning signs installed at the location," the FIR stated.
It further stated that the negligence by the hospital led to Sharma's death. The family has demanded legal action against the responsible officials.
Following the incident on Thursday, all resident doctors at RNT Medical College expressed deep anger and grief over what they called gross negligence by college authorities. The doctors launched a strike and staged a massive protest outside the principal's office, demanding the resignation of administrative officials responsible for ignoring prior complaints.
Meanwhile, the resident doctors' strike entered its fifth day on Monday, continuing to severely impact healthcare services in Udaipur. Services at MB Hospital, Women's Hospital, Super Specialty Wing, Chandpole, and other satellite hospitals remain disrupted due to the ongoing protest.
On Monday, resident doctors staged a rally within the RNT campus, raising slogans like "Down with the college administration," and also burned an effigy in protest. They demanded accountability and justice in the case.
At around 11.15 pm on Sunday, Sharma's body was sent to his hometown Makarana by ambulance. Hundreds of resident doctors gathered outside the MB Hospital mortuary to pay tribute to the deceased. His funeral took place in Makarana on Monday....
