Relief efforts intensified as heavy rain continues
Jaipur, July 24 -- The Rajasthan government has intensified disaster management and relief efforts across the state as heavy monsoon rains continue to lash several districts. According to the weather department, the eastern region of the state will likely receive more rainfall from Saturday. Meanwhile, a 36-year-old woman died when her house collapsed due to continuous rainfall in Jhunjhunu district.
According to official data, the state recorded 327.05 mm of rainfall between July 1 and 23, which is nearly double the normal average of 163.88 mm for this period. As many as 31 districts, including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Alwar, Ajmer, Kota, Baran, Bhilwara, and Udaipur, have received over 60% more rainfall than normal, triggering flood preparedness and precautionary measures by the administration.
On Wednesday, several parts of the state, including Jhunjhunu, Kota, Jaipur, and Sikar, recorded fresh rainfall. In Gudhagaurji town of Jhunjhunu district, a 36-year-old woman, Anju, died after a mud house collapsed due to heavy rain.
On Wednesday, Jaipur recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1degC. Phalodi in Jodhpur registered the highest at 36.6degC, followed by Bikaner at 36.5degC.
Meanwhile, in Jhalawar, two gates of Bhimsagar dam have been opened to release excess water. In Tonk district, the Bisalpur Dam's water level rose by 6 cm in the past 24 hours, reaching 315.39 RL metres. Officials said the dam gates could be opened within a day or two if water inflow continues.
"During the monsoon season of 2025, Rajasthan recorded 99.57% more rainfall than normal between July 1 and July 23. The state received a total of 327.05 mm of rainfall during this period, compared to the normal average of 163.88 mm," states the release from the CM's office.
In a meeting held on July 20 under the chairmanship of the chief minister, all relevant departments were directed to ensure advance preparations in view of the possibility of continued heavy rainfall and potential flood situations, it states. The meteorological department has predicted a new low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours, leading to an increase in rainfall activity over parts of eastern Rajasthan from July 26. "Heavy rainfall is expected to intensify between July 26 and 30. There is a strong possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in southeastern and southern parts of the state on July 27 and 28."
The government has activated extensive flood preparedness measures across the state in view of the ongoing heavy monsoon. Emergency control rooms are operational round the clock in all districts, with helpline numbers 1070, 112 (state) and 1077 (districts). Advance funds of Rs.20 lakh each have been allocated to divisional headquarters and Rs.10 lakh to other districts for immediate relief and rescue. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in vulnerable regions, supported by civil defence volunteers.
So far, 302 people have been successfully rescued, and coordination has been established with the Army and Air Force to minimise disaster impact during the monsoon season.
According to officials, the district collectors have been instructed to remain prepared for immediate relief operations in waterlogged and vulnerable areas. Temporary relief camps have been set up for affected families, providing food, drinking water, medicines, and essential supplies. Medical teams have been dispatched to impacted regions, and medicines along with chlorine tablets are being distributed to prevent waterborne diseases.
