Raj has right to verify papers of suspicious people, says minister
Jaipur, June 27 -- The Rajasthan police has the right to verify the documents of suspicious persons, state home minister Jawahar Singh Bedham said in response to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's Tuesday statement that at least 300-400 migrant labourers from Itahar in Cooch Behar district have been tagged as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants by Bharatiya Janata Party-run Rajasthan government and forcibly held inside a house.
"There is assembly election coming in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the people of Bengal with such bizarre statements. She is frustrated. Rajasthan police have the right to verify the documents of anyone who seems to be suspicious," Bedham said on Thursday speaking to the reporters.
He further added: "We keep getting two to three complaints every day that some people have entered the state illegally either from Bangladesh or any other country. Our police are doing their job. They are taking necessary action against such people."
On Tuesday, Banerjee during a press conference at the state assembly in Kolkata, said, "We have received information that 300-400 people from Itahar have been rounded up and forcibly held inside a house in Rajasthan. They were tagged as Bangladeshis because they speak Bengali although they showed their Indian identity documents. I will bring this to the notice of the Prime Minister. People who speak Bengali are being illegally pushed back to Bangladesh by BJP-ruled states," Banerjee said.
Mosaraf Hussen, the TMC legislator from Itahar in north Bengal's Cooch Behar district bordering Bangladesh, claimed that those allegedly held by the Rajasthan administration are kept in a house named Ambedkar Bhawan in Bhiwadi city in the National Capital Region (NCR). The chief minister alleged that bona fide citizens of West Bengal are being selectively arrested in BJP-ruled states.
She said : "Anybody who came from Bangladesh after March 1971 (when the nation was born) is a bonafide Indian citizen. If speaking Bengali is a crime then let the Centre ban the language Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose spoke. We have 15 million migrant workers in Bengal. People from other states work here as well. Is that a crime? Similar incidents have happened in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra."
Reacting to Banerjee, Bedham said, "Why does she keep silence when the Hindus and the workers of BJP are tortured in Bengal? Her police helps them when Hindu women face any violence in Bengal. The public are against it which caused her frustration."...
