Rain triggers dense fog, 40 passengers escape bus fire
Jaipur, Jan. 29 -- Weather conditions in Rajasthan changed sharply on Wednesday, following rainfall and hailstorm activity for the second time in nearly a week, with dense fog blanketing several districts and severely reducing visibility in the early morning hours.
The poor visibility led to a major road accident in Bikaner district, where a luxury sleeper bus rammed into a stationary truck on the highway and caught fire. All 40 passengers on board managed to escape safely, averting a major tragedy, police said.
The accident occurred around 5.15am near Sesomu School, shortly after the bus crossed Shri Dungargarh in Bikaner district, they said.
The Jaipur-Bikaner-bound sleeper bus of Milan Travels collided with a truck loaded with fodder that had come to a halt on National Highway after being involved in an earlier accident. The impact triggered a fire in both the bus and the truck, completely gutting the bus.
Passengers broke emergency windows and jumped out to save their lives. According to officials, no casualties were reported in the incident. The bus had departed from Jaipur around 11pm on Tuesday night.
Dense fog was reported not only in Bikaner but also in Jaipur, Sri Ganganagar and Nagaur districts, with visibility in several areas dropping to less than 30 metres. Due to the extremely low visibility, vehicles were seen moving with headlights on at around 8am.
The Meteorological Department said the recent rain and hailstorm activity has altered weather conditions across the state. Experts have also forecast the activation of another western disturbance from January 31, which could bring strong winds and another spell of rain to parts of Rajasthan.
Meanwhile, cold conditions persisted across the state, with Pali recording the lowest minimum temperature at 2.4 degrees Celsius.
Other minimum temperatures included 6.1 degree Celsius in Lunkaransar, 5.7 degree Celsius in Nagaur, 6.9 degree Celsius in Sirohi, 7.6 degree Celsius in Bikaner and 7.7 degree Celsius in Sri Ganganagar....
