Barmer/Jaisalmer, July 17 -- Amid rising tensions over a controversial chhatri (cenotaph) reconstruction in Basanpeer village of Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district, the local administration on Wednesday imposed Section 163 (formerly Section 144) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The move aims to prevent potential disruption of law and order and maintain communal harmony in the region. Confirming the development, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Jaisalmer, Saksham Goyal, said, "The decision was taken due to the possibility of disturbance to public peace and safety." He added that the situation in Basanpeer remains tense and, if not controlled, could impact communal harmony. The administration has issued prohibitory orders to restrict unlawful gatherings. The tension in Basanpeer village centers around the reconstruction of ancient chhatris (memorial canopies) located near the village pond. These historic structures were previously demolished under unclear circumstances.
