Police bust training camp for gangsters in Chambal ravines
Jaipur/Bharatpur, June 7 -- The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of the Rajasthan Police has uncovered a covert shooting range hidden deep within the Chambal ravines, where gangsters from across states were being trained to handle deadly automatic weapons, officials aware of the matter said.
The investigations reveal that Ramdutt alias Sonu Chambal-a notorious gangster who is behind bars in Jhajjar (Haryana)-has in the past two-three years trained around three to four dozen youngsters in firearm use at the site.
The revelation came after the AGTF, acting on specific intelligence, conducted a raid on Wednesday and seized an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and 34 live cartridges. A father-son duo, Jitendra alias Jeetu Chambal (30) and Tejpal (60), both residents of Basai Ghiyaram village in Rajakhera, Dholpur, were arrested, said police.
Police said the duo had developed the firing range in the rugged terrain of Chambal to serve as a safe haven and training camp for gangsters from Rajasthan and other states. Jeetu is the brother of Ramdutt alias Sonu Chambal and Shivdutt-both associated in the past with the Anandpal gang.
Ramdatt, who heads the gang, has at least 35 criminal cases against him, including charges of murder, robbery, abduction, dacoity, attacks on police, and arms trafficking across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Telangana.
The Chambal ravines, historically known for dacoit activity, have seen a new wave of criminal enterprise. What was once the domain of outlaws with country-made weapons has now turned into a nexus for organized crime with sophisticated arms and cross-border connections.
The arrested brothers-Jeetu, Sonu, and Shivdutt-were long associated with the dreaded Anandpal gang. Police say the trio turned the family's ancestral land in the ravines into a haven for fugitives, offering training, shelter, and weaponry in exchange for loyalty or money.
During interrogation, Jeetu admitted that his brother Ramdutt oversaw weapons training at the site, where even high-profile criminals and contract killers honed their shooting skills. Among those reportedly trained there were the assailants involved in the high-profile murders of Raju Thehat and Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi.
Further probing has exposed disturbing ties between the Chambal network and the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which police say has expanded its operations into Jaipur. Investigators believe that the AK-47 seized from Jeetu was supplied by Shivraj Singh, a key member of the Lawrence network who was arrested on Thursday.
Police are now probing whether the recovered AK-47 was stolen from security forces or manufactured in an illegal arms facility. The firing range, hidden deep in the Chambal ravines, served as a secluded and strategic location for such unlawful training activities.
The discovery of this illegal training hub has highlighted the extent of interlinked gangster activity spanning multiple states. With the Chambal ravines serving as a lawless training ground, the Rajasthan Police is now bracing for a wider crackdown on the arms trafficking and criminal training syndicate that threatens public security across the region.
A senior police official familiar with the development said that around 15 days ago, wanted criminal Rajveer was arrested from Rewari (Haryana) along with an AK-56 rifle.
He and his associate were planning to help another gangster, Papla Gujjar, escape from jail. They are linked to the Ansari gang in Uttar Pradesh. Now, with the recovery of an AK-47, gang members associated with Anandpal gang members, Rohit Godara, and Lawrence Bishnoi have also been arrested.
"An interstate alliance is operating among these gangs, particularly in border areas such as Bhiwadi, Sikar, Bikaner, Churu, and Dholpur. To dismantle this nexus, the Rajasthan Police is working jointly with neighboring states including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh," the official added....
