Jaipur, Aug. 6 -- Rajasthan Police on Monday used water cannons to disperse NSUI workers and senior Congress leaders, including Sachin Pilot, as they tried to march towards the Chief Minister's residence in Jaipur, demanding the immediate resumption of student union elections. The protest, held at Shaheed Smarak on MI Road, drew participation from several top Congress leaders, including AICC General Secretary Pilot and NSUI national president Varun Chaudhary. Following the demonstration at Shaheed Smarak, NSUI workers attempted to break through police barricades to march towards the chief minister's residence in the Civil Lines area. Police responded by deploying water cannons to disperse the crowd. Mild scuffles and pushing ensued between the protesters and police personnel. Over 30 leaders and workers, including Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar and NSUI state president Vinod Jakhar, were detained during the protest. Speaking at the demonstration, Pilot hit out at the BJP-led state government and said it was working in a dictatorial manner taking inspiration from Delhi. "This is a double-engine government that is doing nothing. When elections arrive, they raise issues of Hindu-Muslim, temple-mosque and try to polarise voters. If people continue to vote based on religion and caste, this will happen," he said. He added that the state government should restart the student union elections. He said the shadow of authoritarianism is rapidly spreading from Delhi to Jaipur. "But I want to warn the chief minister - this approach is not right. In a democracy, you must have faith in the Constitution. How long will you suppress the voices of lakhs of people by not holding elections? I want to ask the government: why haven't the elections been conducted? And if you're not going to hold them, at least tell the public the reason." Commenting on the matter, BJP spokesperson Mukesh Pareek said that Pilot made baseless allegations. He added that the Congress is frustrated because the youth are supporting the BJP and its pro-youth policies. During its tenure, the Congress undermined the rights of the people - a fact well known to everyone. The BJP government in Rajasthan is focused on the state's growth and progress....
