Panchayat declares local body poll boycott
Bharatpur, Jan. 5 -- Hundreds of villagers from Rara tehsil gathered at a panchayat in Santruk village on Sunday and decided to boycott upcoming panchayat elections if their demand to include their panchayats in Bharatpur district is not fulfilled.
After 17 new districts were formed during the Congress-led government, Deeg was formed as a new district from Bharatpur, but people of 10 panchayats under Rarah tehsil have been protesting to include their panchayats in Bharatpur from newly formed Deeg district.
The Santruk panchayat is the last village of Rajasthan's border in Bharatpur.
The panchayat is around 15 kilometre away from Bharatpur district headquarter while newly formed Deeg district's headquarter is around 30 kilometre away.
A villager, Virendra Singh, said, "Our panchayat is under Rarah tehsil adjoining Bharatpur district, but the government merged it with Deeg district. Bharatpur district headquarter is nearest for us."
People had already protested against the Congress government in previous assembly elections over the demand to retain their panchayats in Bharatpur.
Members of panchayats have already met with the chief minister and BJP MLA from Kumher-Deeg, Shailesh Singh, to express their demand to merge their panchayats in Bharatpur district.
Vijay Singh, former deputy pradhan of Kumher panchayat samiti said people have declared a boycott against the panchayat elections.
"All villagers in ten panchayats will completely boycott upcoming panchayat elections if they are not merged from Deeg to Bharatpur," he said....
