Owner, driver held; Sharma declares aid
Jaipur, Oct. 17 -- Jaisalmer police on Wednesday night detained bus owner Turab Ali and driver Shaukat Khan in connection with the Jaisalmer bus fire tragedy.
Jaisalmer SP Abhishek Shivhare said, "During the investigation, bus owner Shaukat Khan, a resident of Mandla Kalan, Phalodi, and vehicle owner Turrab Ali, a resident of Vinayak Nagar, Chittorgarh (currently residing in Jodhpur), have been taken into custody for questioning. The bus body manufacturer, Manish Jain of Coach Vasaj, has already been booked, and the RTO Jodhpur has seized his workshop. His role in the incident is currently under investigation."
Meanwhile, CM Bhajanlal Sharma has announced a financial assistance package for the victims. Families that lost three or more members will receive Rs.25 lakh as compensation. Families that lost one or two members will be given Rs.10 lakh per deceased person. He also announced Rs.2 lakh each for the seriously injured and Rs.1 lakh for those with minor injuries.
However, the victims' families have staged a protest at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Jodhpur, demanding higher compensation and refusing to accept the bodies until their demands are met.
The fatal incident occurred on October 14, around 3.30pm, when a private AC sleeper bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur caught fire. Nineteen passengers were burnt alive on the spot, while one more died on the way to Jodhpur.
Former CM Ashok Gehlot after meeting the injured and families of victims at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Jodhpur said, "There are multiple versions about how the accident occurred. The government must conduct a thorough investigation-how the vehicle came, who issued its fitness certificate-so that such incidents are not repeated."...
