Over half of Raj dams on full capacity due to intense rain
Jaipur, Sept. 2 -- As Rajasthan received 58% excess rain in the monsoon season this year so far, more than half of its total dams have filled up by August end, showed data from the state water resources portal (WRD).
Monsoon officially entered the state on June 20, as per IMD officials, and is likely to last till September end. However, heavy rainfall since the first day led to a flood-like situation in several places. According to gridded data of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) -- it is the only official data source for tracking rain trends in India long-term -- Rajasthan has received 581.9 mm rain up to August 31 this monsoon season, which runs officially from June to September.
While the Eastern Rajasthan recorded 826.9 mm rain which is 56% more than the normal average, the western part had 386.8 mm rains which is 61% more than the normal.
Due to this heavy rainfall, 370 of the total 693 dams in Rajasthan have been filled up by Saturday while 206 have partially been filled up and 117 are yet empty, showed WRD data.
Also, 84.58% of the total water storage capacity of these 693 dams was also covered by Saturday. Of the 22 major dams across Tonk, Kota, Jaipur, Banswara, Deeg, Dausa, with each more than 100 million cubic metres (mcm) capacity, six dams recorded full storage on Saturday, data showed....
