Over 24 encroachments razed in Chomu amid high security
Jaipur, Jan. 3 -- The Jaipur district administration on Friday continued its anti-encroachment drive in Chomu town under tight police security, with police confirming that so far, more than two dozen illegal structures in the area were cleared by the municipal council officials.
The administration also demolished illegal structures allegedly built by those involved in stone-pelting on December 26 during an anti-encroachment drive near a mosque, police said.
Chomu Police Station SHO Pradeep Sharma said, "Over the past few days, we had pasted notices on the houses of several accused stone-pelters, seeking their replies within three days. The deadline for submitting responses ended on December 31. Since no satisfactory replies or legal documents were received, the municipal council proceeded with demolition action against the illegal constructions."
Sharma added that the administration and police had also issued notices in Pathan Colony on December 29 regarding 20 illegal slaughterhouses and four unauthorised constructions, granting them three days to respond. "As the concerned individuals failed to reply or produce valid legal documents, the administration decided to demolish the illegal structures," he said.
The SHO confirmed that the municipal council has taken action against more than two dozen encroachments in the area so far.
After Friday prayers at the Imam Chowk mosque, members of the Muslim community issued statements addressing the issue. Some representatives alleged a conspiracy against the community, asserting that local Muslim residents were not involved in the stone-pelting incident and accusing the authorities of tarnishing their image. A few residents staged a protest against the removal of encroachments
"However, the police promptly intervened and pacified them through dialogue," said Sharma.
Other residents, however, acknowledged that encroachments were unlawful and described the administrative action as justified. They also voiced concern that small vendors and shopkeepers, who depend on modest stalls for their livelihood, should not have been subjected to the same treatment.
Sharma said that after the stone-pelting incident, around 110 people were detained, out of which 19 have been arrested so far.
"During interrogation, the names of 15 more accused have surfaced, who are currently absconding," he said.
Meanwhile, reacting to the action, deputy chief minister Premchand Bairwa posted on X, stating, "A strong message to those who play with law and order. The bulldozer action taken by the Bhajanlal government against antisocial elements who spread unrest and disturbed peace in Chomu clearly shows that no one is above the law. There will be no compromise on peace, security, and good governance in Rajasthan. The government is firmly committed to taking immediate and strict action against those involved in unrest, violence, and damage to public property. Commitment to good governance - strike at crime, reassurance to the common people."
Sharma stated that the situation in Chomu is currently completely peaceful and that the police force will remain deployed in the town for the next few days as a precautionary measure to ensure continued law and order.
Several police personnel were injured in the December 26 violence, prompting police to clamp down swiftly with detentions, heavy deployment, and suspension of internet services to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control....
