Barmer/ Jaisalmer, Nov. 10 -- Experts have flagged at least 12 bird deaths, including both local and migratory species, that reportedly occurred since early October in Jaisalmer's Degrai Oran after colliding with high-tension power lines that cut across the area. The latest incident occurred on Saturday when a Tawny Eagle was found dead beneath an overhead power line, wildlife activist Sumer Singh Sanwta said. Local birdwatchers say that such incidents are becoming distressingly common in the Degrai Oran area, which serves as a crucial habitat for the Great Indian Bustard, Tawny Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, and Demoiselle Crane-species that are either endangered or visit the region during their seasonal migrations. Wildlife activists claimed that the first casualty occurred on October 1, when a Demoiselle Crane was found dead. Four more cranes died on October 21, followed by two Egyptian Vultures on October 22, another crane on October 23, and a Tawny Eagle on October 25. Activists alleged administrative neglect by the forest department. A forest official confirmed that the birds died after touching high-tension power lines but admitted helplessness.
