One dead in Rajsamand, as state grapples with flood-like situation
Jaipur/Udaipur, July 19 -- Heavy rains continued to batter Rajasthan following one woman was washed away in Rajsamand district on Friday, while a flood-like situation was created in at least four districts on Friday, prompting the district administrations to announce the closure of all schools and deploy civil defence teams to rescue people, officials aware of the matter said.
"Following incessant rains in the last two days, many parts of Ajmer, Kota, Rajsamand, and Pali have been flooded. In Ajmer, the district administration has directed all schools to remain shut. Meanwhile, Kota and Pali district administrations have also deployed SDRF and civil defence teams across vulnerable areas to rescue people," an official from the state disaster management force said on condition of anonymity.
On Friday, many major roads in Ajmer's Pushkar were flooded as several cars almost drowned and residents got stuck at their homes. Nearly 1,000 houses got waterlogged in Pushkar, while the electricity supply was also disconnected in the region. In Ajmer city, several hospitals, including the JLN Medical College and Hospital, have also been waterlogged causing trouble for patients and their attendants, said officials.
"A fountain near Pushkar's Jharneshwar Mahadev Temple is flowing beyond the danger level. In view of the situation, the SDRF team and civil defence teams have been deployed in several locations to rescue the people from vulnerable areas," Deshal Daan, the commissioner of the Ajmer Municipality, said on Friday.
He added, "The district collector, Lok Bondu, on Friday also visited Anasagar and Pushkar regions and directed officials to keep a watch on the development. However, the situation is under control now."
Assembly speaker and Ajmer North MLA Vasudev Devnani also reviewed the situation after heavy rains lashed Ajmer. He directed the district collector, municipal corporation commissioner and Ajmer Development Authority commissioner to immediately start relief work.
"Wherever there is waterlogging, immediate relief should be provided to people. Instructions were given to immediately install pumps to drain out water in the areas around the Bandi river such as Moti Vihar, Gyan Vihar, Engineer Nagar and other affected areas," Devnani said.
Similar instructions have also been given to the Kota district administration by Kota MP Om Birla. "Due to continuous heavy rains in Kota's Ramganj Mandi area, a serious situation of waterlogging has arisen in many areas, including Ramganj Mandi Nagar, Khairabad, Kudayla and Mayla. People are facing problems due to overflowing drains and obstructions in drainage systems," Birla said during a meeting after visiting the vulnerable areas on Friday.
He also asked officials to send a detailed report of the affected areas. "SDRF and civil teams are doing their job. I have also directed the administration to record a video of those affected areas and prepare a proposal so that waterlogging in the populated areas can be prevented in future."
Pali district collector LN Mantri also held a meeting with the officials after many areas faced a flood-like situation.
"The district collector asked the UIT municipal corporation and water resources department to ensure immediate arrangements for drainage of water from waterlogged areas. He also directed to prepare and submit updated reports of the drained areas on a daily basis. He said that if required, water should be drained out with immediate effect by hiring mud pumps or by using necessary resources of municipal corporation, PWD etc," the Pali district collector's office said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a woman was swept away in a river and two minors have been trapped when the banking area of a canal collapsed in Rajsamand in two separate incidents on Friday.
"Torrential rains in Rajsamand district have thrown life out of gear, with rivers and streams overflowing and disrupting transportation in many areas. In Kariya village, near Uthdon Ki Bhagal in the Kumbhalgarh area, two children, 6 and 7 years, have been trapped when a river overflew and flooded the nearby area due to heavy rainfall. Rescue operations are currently underway to rescue the children," said an official from the district administration.
The second incident occurred near the bridge on the road from Veron Ka Math to Parshuram Mahadev. A mentally challenged woman is believed to have been swept away by a rain-fed stream. The stream flows toward the Veron Ka Math Kund, raising further concern about her safety.
Upon receiving information, the Kumbhalgarh Station House Officer (SHO) Vishal Singh and rescue teams immediately rushed to the spots. "However, due to the ongoing heavy rain and waterlogging, reaching the affected areas is proving to be difficult," he added.
SHO Vishal Singh said, "The rescue operation at both the places are underway, we have called the SDRF team for help, as water flow at both the places is very high and we are facing challenges to find out the victims. However, efforts are on we hope to trace the victim soon".
The local administration has appealed to the public to stay away from swollen rivers and streams. People are advised not to leave their homes unnecessarily and to ensure that children do not venture near water bodies during this period, it added.
On Friday, the maximum rainfall was reported in Kota's Sangod with 170 mm, followed by Ajmer's Nasirabad, Ajmer City, Kota's Mandana, and Baran's Atru with 80mm, Ajmer rural, Jhalawar's Jhalrapatan, and Bundi's Patan with 70mm.
