Not privilege, it's my right: Upasana defends her egg-freezing advice
India, Nov. 21 -- Days after facing backlash for advising IIT Hyderabad students to freeze their eggs so they could focus on their careers without rushing into marriage, Upasana Konidela has issued a detailed statement defending her remarks. The entrepreneur and vice chairperson of CSR at Apollo Hospitals, who is married to actor Ram Charan and is expecting twins, shared her response on X and Instagram, calling it her right, not a privilege, to choose the timeline of her own life.
Upasana's comments, made during an interaction at IIT Hyderabad earlier this week, sparked wide debate. Medical professionals noted that egg freezing is expensive and medically unpredictable, while several students, doctors and corporate voices criticised the suggestion as "privileged advice". Some online users also alleged a conflict of interest because of her family's association with Apollo Hospitals.
Responding to the criticism, Upasana said she welcomed a "healthy debate," and urged people to read her full statement for clarity on her choices around marriage, career and motherhood. "Is it wrong for her to wait until she finds the right partner? Is it wrong for her to choose when she wants to have children based on her own circumstances?" she wrote.
She also corrected misinformation about her age at key milestones: she married actor Ram Charan at 27, froze her eggs at 29 (clarifying it was not at Apollo), welcomed daughter Klin Kaara at 36, and announced on October 23 that she is expecting twins at 39. Upasana concluded: "For me, marriage and career are not competing priorities, they are equally meaningful parts of a fulfilled life. But I decide the timeline. That's not privilege, it's my right."
