Jaipur/Barmer/Jalore, Aug. 28 -- Nine people were killed in rain-related incidents in Jalore and Balotra districts since Tuesday, even as the India Meteorological Department warned of fresh heavy rainfall in Kota and Udaipur divisions from August 29-30. A well-marked low-pressure system has developed over the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast and is expected to move west-northwest, bringing another spell of heavy showers to Rajasthan. While light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers is likely in southern parts of the state on Thursday, the intensity is forecast to increase sharply in the coming days, the IMD stated. The weather department said that Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions may also witness moderate to heavy rainfall between August 29-31, with rains continuing across most districts through the first week of September. The state has already received 56% above-average rainfall this season. Against the normal 350 mm between June 1 and August 25, Rajasthan has recorded 546.3 mm so far. In the past 24 hours alone, Bhoongra in Banswara recorded 154 mm, Kotri in Bhilwara 53 mm, Kathumar in Alwar 89 mm, Kotkasim 35 mm, and Chittorgarh 43 mm. Heavy monsoon rains have triggered multiple tragedies in Rajasthan, claiming at least nine lives in Jalore and Balotra districts over the past two days, while search operations continue for several missing persons. In Jalore's Sayla area, six people were swept away by strong currents in the Sukdi river near Asana village on Tuesday evening. They had entered the river to bathe when the water flow suddenly intensified. "Despite overnight rescue efforts by NDRF and local authorities, only four bodies were recovered on Wednesday, while the search for the remaining two continues," Jalore district collector Pradeep Gawande said. In another incident the same day, two people died while attempting to rescue a woman trapped in a deep sand pit in the Sukdi river near Sathu village in Bagara. The pit, allegedly caused by illegal sand mining, turned fatal when strong currents swept them away. Their bodies were recovered late Tuesday night. Meanwhile, in Balotra district on Wednesday, a Bolero carrying devotees was washed away by the Luni river near Jasol Bypass. The vehicle, with eight passengers on board, was retrieved after an hour-and-a-half-long effort. Two children and a woman were found dead inside, while two critically injured survivors were hospitalised. Three others remain missing....
